Of the 250,000 men of eligible age in 1914,
nearly 100,000 served overseas

NZ forces fought at Gallipoli, on the Western Front
 and in the Middle East

Our forces were involved in the conflict from the capture of Samoa
in 1914 to the end of the fighting on Armistice Day in 1918

The total population of New Zealand in 1914
was just over 1 million

More than 18,000 New Zealanders died as a result of the war
and over 40,000 more were wounded

11 Victoria Crosses were won by soldiers serving with
New Zealand forces

Nearly 100,000 New Zealanders served overseas,
many of them young men who had never left home before

More than 2200 Maori and around 460 Pacific Islanders
 served overseas with the New Zealand forces
