First World War cemeteries map: Europe, UK and Republic of Ireland

This map locates the 430 cemeteries in Western Europe, the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland which include graves or memorials for members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force who died during the First World War. For each cemetery (click on list below the map) we have indicated the number of NZEF personnel buried or memorialised there, and provided a link to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website for more information. In the case of cemeteries where three or fewer New Zealanders are buried (blue pins), the individuals are named and links are provided to their service record information on the Cenotaph website.

The grouping of the pins in Europe reflects the key battles in Belgium during 1917 and, further south, France in 1916 and 1918. Those buried in the UK generally died in hospitals of wounds or disease, including men who had been evacuated from Gallipoli in 1915. A separate map showing cemeteries on Gallipoli and in the Middle East can be found here. See also a CWGC cemeteries in New Zealand map.

Hi Kris - I asked military historian Ian McGibbon about this one, here is his response: 'Souvenir Dump was nowhere near St Omer, which was well behind the lines throughout and would not have been the scene of a skirmish on 5 May 1917. I think the dump was near Messines. Have a look at this web address and use find to look for 'Souvenir': http://nzetc.victoria.ac.nz/tm/scholarly/tei-WH1-Engi-t1-body-d9.html '

Hello, I am hoping you can help my family. My grandfather was involved in a skirmish on 5th May 1917 at Souvenir Dump. We are wondering if that would be near Longuenesse (St Omer) Souvenir Cemetery. My grandfather survived the skirmish (thankfully), so searching cemetery records is not relevant here. If you cannot help, any suggestion of where to go next would be very much appreciated.

Hi William - you can get this from the CWGC website - http://www.cwgc.org/ - click on 'Find War Dead' then choose 'Belgium' for country commemorated in and tick 'New Zealand forces'. This will give you a results page which you can then export to a spreadsheet for further data manipulation. Regards, Jamie Mackay

Hi Ruth, you can search for their records on Cenotaph Database - from here most names now have links to their full service records: http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/Cenotaph/locations.aspx?

Let us know if you  can't find any of these men and we can check some other sources.

CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL

Do you have information about them. We are producing a Glasgow Necropolis WW1 Heritage Trail map and next year we will have a Roll of Honour on our website www.glasgownecropolis.org with links to our Profiles - it would be good to have information on these men.
