19 May 1840Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet

Six rangatira (chiefs) of Ngāti Raukawa, and Ihākara Tahurangi and Te Kehu (possibly the wife of Rere-tā-whangawhanga who signed on 16 May at Waikanae) of Te Āti Awa, signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) copy of the Treaty of Waitangi on the Kapiti coast, possibly Ōtaki, on 19 May.

Missionaries Henry Williams and Octavius Hadfield witnessed the signatures, though Williams conducted the negotiations on his own as Hadfield had little interest in being connected to the British government.

Ihākara Tahurangi signed his own name as ‘Tahurangi’, while the other seven signatories added a distinctive mark next to their names, which were written by Williams.
