83 | Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet | Toremi | Horomona Toremi | Ngāti Raukawa, Rangitāne | Ōtaki? 19 May 1840 |
Horomona Toremi signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi on 19 May 1840 at Ōtaki. The Ngāti Kahorotetini rangatira (chief) of the Ngāti Raukawa iwi (tribe) also had connections to Rangitāne. He was born in Waikato and in 1855 married Amiria, who died in 1862.
In 1860 Toremi co-wrote a letter to Ngāti Kahungunu saying that Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Toa and Te Āti Awa in Wellington did not support the action of Taranaki in forcibly opposing the Waitara purchase – Wiremu Kīngi needed to settle his own wrongs.
He took part in the sale agreement for the Mahinarangi and Heretaunga Blocks in 1855, and the Te Awa Hou No. 2 Block in the Manawatū District in 1859. Toremi attended the Kohimarama conferences in 1860 and made speeches in support of the government. In 1866 he was involved in the sale of the Rangitīkei-Manawatū Block to the Crown. He signed sale documents for Native Reserves in the Te Awa Hou Block in 1872 and the Horowhenua Block in 1874.
In the 1870s, Toremi was photographed in the cartes de visite style by an unknown photographer. He is pictured fourth from the left in the top row, then again in the fifth portrait on the second row. Toremi died in Horowhenua.
