Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Te Moroati Kiharoa signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Treaty of Waitangi sheet in Ōtaki on 19 May 1840. He was a rangatira of Ngāti Pane, Ngāti Tūranga of Ngāti Raukawa and son of Kiharoa who may have signed the Treaty on 16 May in Waikanae. His mother was Kererina te Kaiwhaka.

During 1860 Kiharoa attended at least four Kohimarama conferences in Auckland and authored a letter to Governor Gore-Browne from Ōtaki. In this letter he asked for the land purchasers to survey the land to know its worth before they offer a price. [1]
