Wellington Mounted Rifles on Gallipoli

Soldiers of the Wellington Mounted Rifles ‘at the foot of Chunuk Bair, going out to Hill 60’, Gallipoli Peninsula, 1915.

Very few horses were landed on Gallipoli because of the lack of space for them, the nature of the terrain and the shortage of water. The men of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade served as infantry on Gallipoli after landing in May 1915. Their riding horses remained at Zeitoun Camp in Egypt.

I recently represented the NZ Vets NSW on ANZAC day at the town of Kempsey NSW .
I presented the president of the RSL with a WW1 copy of Lemon Squeezer/puggaree and Wellington Regt Badge.
Also lead parade 2010 and 2015 same location. Long story??
