Army issue ration biscuit

British-made army issue ration biscuit, 'Huntley & Palmers Army No 4', made by the well-known biscuit manufacturers Huntley and Palmers during the First World War. Together with tinned bully beef, these biscuits formed the basis of the military rations eaten by Anzac and British soldiers during the Gallipoli campaign. This monotonous diet was unsuited to the warm climate and lacking in vitamins. The bully beef usually disintegrated into an runny mess in the heat, while the rock-hard biscuits exacerbated or caused dental problems amongst troops on the peninsula.
