Town 13 km south-east of Rolleston. Nearby Lincoln University was founded as a college in 1878 to provide a practical education in farming. The original Ivey Hall, now surrounded by modern buildings, is a notable historic site. At the college scientists developed new sheep breeds and wheat crosses.

Meaning of place name
After the Earl of Lincoln, fifth duke of Newcastle, and secretery of state for the colonies, who took a practical interest in the affairs of the Canterbury Association. In his 1849 map Captain Joseph Thomas showed Lincoln as the capital of Canterbury, situated at the head of Lyttelton Harbour.
