Hikitene, who signed the Treaty of Waitangi at Waitangi on 6 February 1840, is thought to have been a chief of Te Kapotai at Waikare in the Bay of Islands.
Hikitene was allied with Te Ruki Kawiti and fought alongside him in 1846. Like a number of other important chiefs, including Kawiti, Hōri Kīngi and Te Haratua, he is mentioned in a tau (chant) about the battle of Ruapekapeka.
