Formal portrait of Thomas Edward Taylor, 1910. Taylor (1862-1911) was a prohibitionist
and radical independent politician who opposed the South African War as a capitalist
venture. He lost his parliamentary seat in the 1899 election, partly because of his
outspoken views on the war.
