Te Ārei grave

The grave of Lieutenant E.C. MacNaghten, the artillery officer who fired the first shot of the Taranaki war in March 1860 and was killed at Te Ārei in the last days of fighting.

Although our name is spelt different we are a relative of Lieutenant Edmund MacNaghten who came to NZ at the request of the Colony to protect settlers in New Plymouth against maori attacks. We trust that one day the Govt of NZ will apologise to the families of these soldiers for the sacrifice their ancestors made, ironically at the request of the NZ authorities of the time.
