Sixth Contingent group photo, 1901

The Sixth Contingent (Number 16 Company is pictured here) sailed from Auckland in January 1901 and arrived in South Africa in March. It operated in the Transvaal where it assisted the British forces in interning Boer civilians in concentration camps. A New Zealand soldier noted that such work was 'one of the saddest duties' he performed in South Africa.

My great-grandfather, Arthur Herbert Alexandre, was also in the 6th contingent, number 16 company. If anyone knows of a higher resolution version of this photo, please let me know at [email protected].

Hi Michael - unfortunately we don't have a hi-res copy of this image as it was lent to us by Judith Papanui in the late 1990s at which time we didn't know much about hi-res scanning! Hopefully there will be other group photos of the 6th Contingent available, though I have not come across any online. Regards, Jamie Mackay
