Railways food hamper

As an alternative to the refreshment room crush, in 1928 New Zealand Railways introduced luncheon hampers on main trunk expresses. Available for 3s at Frankton Junction and Marton, they contained a thermos flask of tea, cold ham, tongue, mutton or corned beef, salad, bread and butter, biscuits and cheese, a piece of fruit, condiments, crockery, cutlery and a serviette. But after 'rather disappointing' sales the service was withdrawn in 1931.
