Portrait of Ngāti Maru warrior and religious leader Te Kooti Arikirangi Te Turuki.
It is believed to have been painted from memory and imagination by Thomas Ryan in 1889 or 1891. The artist hoped to meet Te Kooti on a journey into Te Urewera in 1891, but was unsuccessful. He had already met Te Kooti, in Rotorua in 1883.
