The conditions that the New Zealand Division encountered in Italy were significantly different to those experienced in the North African Campaign. As opposed to flat, dry deserts, Italy presented mountainous terrain and heavy snow falls that turned the roads into a muddy morass as they melted. These factors hindered the transportation of men and goods throughout the Italian Campaign.
