Horse towing coal carts

Danny Lawrie leads pit-pony ‘Speedy’, hauling a rake of empty trucks back to the mine in 1948. The skips used underground were much smaller than standard railway trucks, holding 0.6 tonnes. This image emphasises how much effort was expanded trucking coal and moving wagons. The development of hydraulic mining meant a large cost saving in transporting coal.

Heya, the photo of Danny and speedy is a photo of my grandfather our last name is Lawrie not Laurie. If you could correct the misspelling of our last name would be much appreciated
