During the Second World War's Italian Campaign, the progress of the 2nd New Zealand Division was significantly hindered by the country's rugged terrain. In many cases retreating enemy forces had destroyed existing bridges across the country's countless rivers and ravines. In order to continue the Division's advance through Italy, New Zealand Engineers made use of prefabricated Bailey bridges, such as the one seen in the image above. This image, taken around 29 November 1943, shows a Bailey bridge in the Sangro River area.
