The Empire (or Cape Helles) Memorial stands between the two bloodiest 25 April 1915 landing sites at Cape Helles. The walls of the enclosure are a memorial to the missing, and include the names of British, Australian and Indian troops.
There are separate New Zealand memorials to the missing elsewhere on the Gallipoli Peninsula. This memorial commemorates 11 New Zealanders who died serving in British or Australian units, including Bernard Freyberg’s brother Oscar. Scrolling right reveals the village of Seddülbahir in the distance. In the background, ships pass through the entrance to the Dardanelles Strait, and the Asiatic coastline of Turkey can be seen.
