Wahawaha, Rāpata
Ngāti Porou leader Rāpata Wahawaha opposed the Pai Mārire religion and sided with the government against its followers. He was later presented with a ceremonial sword by Queen Victoria for services to the Crown during the New Zealand Wars.

Ngāti Porou leader and politician Āpirana Ngata is one of New Zealand's best-known figures. Working through traditional tribal structures and as MP for Eastern Māori, he worked to strengthen Māori communities and revive Māori culture.

More than 2500 Māori and Pacific Islanders served overseas with the NZEF during the First World War and 336 never returned. One of these casualties was Second Lieutenant Hēnare Mōkena Kōhere, a highly respected officer of the Ngāti Porou tribe, who died of wounds on 16 September 1916.
