North East Valley School memorial. Doug Hopkins tells us that the soldier had been taken down many years ago when it was sited as an earthquake risk. On 11 November 2007 it was put back into its rightful place, the top of the War Memorial Gate, with a special re-dedication Service. 'How proud we all were when it the soldier stood on top again!'

A pupil at NEV School from 1946 - 1954 This was our entrance to our school day. Behind the stone wall was where we used to park out bicycles
Beginning from about 1946 I attended ANZAC Day services at this gate
