Centennial Exhibition tower, 1940
Edmund Anscombe's design for the Centennial Tower at the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in Wellington. The sharp, modern lines of the buildings were seen to capture the wave of modernity and progress that New Zealand was riding.

I was 7 years old and visited this exhibition, I have a vivid memory of this occasion. There was a tall tower which was called a jack and jill from memory, where brave folks had to grab a mat and go down a terrifyingly dangerous slide, I heard of burn injuries where folks missed grabbing the mat. Also a vivid memory of a large rotating spinning disk where folks tried to get on and were thrown off by centrifugal force. There was also a railway steam engine cab on display with all the controls painted in many colours. A beautiful memory for a young child. Also a water feature with fountains and coloured lights.
