New Zealand's first flag

One criticism of the current New Zealand flag is that it looks like the Australian flag. Can you or your students tell the difference?

  1. Ask your students to describe the New Zealand flag or get your class to draw it. They can do this individually or in groups of three. You could ask each group to draw their version on the board.
  2. How did they do? If they struggled you could ask them if that really matters. You could discuss whether or not our flag is too similar to the Australian flag.
  3. Now compare their efforts with the official description from the information on New Zealand flags from NZHistory.net.
  4. Ask the class to explain what they know about the New Zealand flag and the ideas behind its design, for instance, the significance of the colours and stars.
