Biographical information provided by Stefanie Lash, Archives New Zealand, for the He Tohu exhibition:

Harriett Baldock was born in 1838 in Faversham, Kent, England. She appears in the New Zealand public record for the first time on marrying Mark Stott in 1865. They had five children; four girls and one boy. Their son Mark Foster Stott served in the South African War.

The Stott family farmed at Wharehine in Kaipara. They were settlers in Albertland, the name for the area north of Auckland that was the site of an organised settlement of British migration in the 1860s. Social occasions and meetings for the whole town were often held at their house.

Harriett Stott died in 1912, aged 75. For four years after her death her daughter placed an in memoriam notice in the New Zealand Herald, each with a different poem for her mother.
