Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Te Tihi Tawhirikura signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Treaty of Waitangi sheet on 11 May 1840, at Rangitoto, D’Urville Island.

It is unknown exactly who this signatory is. Tawhirikura was the mother of Rerewha-i-te-Rangi, grandmother of Te Puni, from Te Whanganui-a-Tara. Te Tihi is a rangatira from Manukau who sold Otaimake to the Crown in 1842.
