Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Matangi was a Ngāti Te Whiti rangatira, of Te Āti Awa. He signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Treaty of Waitangi sheet on 29 April 1840, at Port Nicholson. This signatory may be Te Manihera Matangi, who lived at Pipitea around this time.
