Nga Tohu

In 1840 more than 500 chiefs signed the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document. Ngā Tohu, when complete, will contain a biographical sketch of each signatory.

Hiangarere signed the signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Treaty of Waitangi sheet on 16 May 1840. He was from the Te Āti Awa iwi.

It is claimed he was the first person to be put under anaesthetic in New Zealand when on 27 September 1847 he had a tumour removed from between his shoulders at the Colonial Hospital in Wellington. 

On his return to Waikanae he is reported to have been lecturing his people about their health. He apparently threw away karaka berries which a boy was about to eat.
