Ngāwaka Te Ao-o-te-rangi signed the Waikato-Manukau sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi in late March or early April 1840, though the sheet is dated 11 April. He was from Ngāti Houroa in Putataka (now Port Waikato).
In 1839 Ngāwaka signed sale documents for the Maraetai and Putataka blocks at Waikato Heads. In 1840 he acted as a witness for the sale of Motutapu Island, the Matuku block on Waiheke Island, and the Pae-o-Kaiwaka and Kotikoti blocks at Waiuku.
