Te Whareumu signed the Waitangi sheet of the Treaty of Waitangi on an unknown date in 1840, probably in the Bay of Islands. He was a rangatira (chief) of the Ngāti Manu and Te Uri Karaka hapū (subtribes) of Ngāti Wai. He lived at Kororāreka (later called Russell).
Te Whareumu may have been the son of Te Whareumu King George. He was killed in a dispute with Te Māhurehure at Waimā in the Hokianga.
