Himiona Tangata signed the Treaty of Waitangi on 28 April 1840 at Kaitāia.
Himiona was freed from slavery by missionary William Gilbert Puckey. His first wife was Ngarahuihui, and in 1838 they had a son, Rēnata Wiremu Tangata, who became a clergyman. Following Ngarahuihui's death, Himiona married Hopia Tiratahi of Awanui on 5 February 1840. The following year he was confirmed as a Christian teacher. Himiona died in 1860. [1]
