26 May 1840Sheet 8 — The Cook Strait (Henry Williams) Sheet
On 26 May 1840, Henry Williams and Octavius Hadfield returned to the Manawatū district in the schooner Ariel, captained by George Thomas Clayton. Whilst there, seven rangatira from Ngāti Te Ūpokoiri, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Apa, and Ngāti Te Whiti, amongst others, signed the Cook Strait (Henry Williams) copy of the Treaty of Waitangi. While Hadfield witnessed the signatures along with Williams, it was Williams who negotiated for the signatures to the treaty.
All of these signatories added their distinct mark next to their name, which was written by Williams.
