Three die in Īnangahua earthquake

24 May 1968

This magnitude 7.1 earthquake was centred near Īnangahua Junction, a small community 40 km east of Westport. It struck at 5.24 a.m., shaking many people from their beds.

At Whitecliffs a limestone bluff collapsed onto a farmhouse, killing one woman occupant and fatally injuring another. Shortly after the earthquake a motorist was killed near Greymouth when his car hit a section of road that had subsided at a bridge approach. Three men were later killed when a rescue helicopter crashed.
