The Waimangu landscape was formed by the Tarawera eruption. A scenic reserve was created in 1907, but tourist enterprises found it difficult to operate at such an active site. Frying-pan Crater erupted so violently in 1917 that it destroyed the villa built to accommodate sightseers.
