It appears that the names of the Māori who served are separated from the European names (aside from the fallen comrades). 

The first lightbox image shows the ‘fallen comrades’ and it is mixed. The second is the left façade of the memorial, and shows names of the region's Māori troops. The third is the right façade, showing European names.

The Page's & Beattie's were early settlers in the Waimamaku district around 1880's. The H J Page named on the memorial was killed in action on 26 Sept 1916 at Somme, France.

Kia ora
My name is George Martin Tinker, and I am the direct descendant of Lieutenant Commander John Anthony Martin commander of HMS Lobster, who drowned whilst on active service at the port of Murmansk in Russia, in 1919.
If anyone has any information pertinent to his movements and activities in the period leading up to his enlistment, and then on until his demise I would be most great full to receive them.

Hi - it appears my grandfather's name, Richard John White, is on this memorial. He was living in Palmerston North when he enlisted and returned there after the war. Does anyone know why the names of servicemen from out of the district were put on memorial in Northland? Also, because he never died in the war, was the memorial simply to acknowledge all servicemen? Thanks. Pat

This image is of the War Memorial located at Waiotemarama at the Sports grounds which are on State Highway 12 opposite the entrace to Waiotemarama Gorge Road.

This photo is actually of the Memorial that stands in the grounds of the old Waiotemarama School. It is the Waiotemarama Memorial. There is no memorial in Waimamaku. It was erected at the junction of State Hiway 12 and Waiotemarama Gorge Road and was moved to its current position after the closure of the school in the 70's. Services are held there every Anzac day.
