The Ruapehu at Sierra Leone

Hawkers bring canoes alongside the troopship Ruapehu at Freetown, Sierra Leone in 1917. The ship was travelling from New Zealand to England via the Indian and Atlantic oceans. New Zealand troopships sailed around the Cape of Good Hope rather than through the Suez Canal from mid-1916, after the New Zealand Expeditionary Force was relocated from the Middle East to the Western Front.
