This article about Thames Valley’s most famous victory – over Australia, 16–14 – appeared in the New Zealand Herald, 19 September 1962.
The match, played the previous day, was the Wallabies’ last provincial game before the third and final test at Eden Park. Australia led at halftime, but J.P. Maxwell and T.J. Kilpin scored tries before T.E. Shaw secured victory for the Swamp Foxes by kicking his second dropped goal from 40 m. Shaw also converted both tries.
The Australians lost the second and third tests narrowly after drawing the first. However, they were also defeated by Canterbury, Southland – and North Otago!
