Sending morse code from telegraph office Group of young telegraph messengers

Staff working at a telegraph office, circa 1910s.

In 1914, telegraph offices were still male domains. Men were thought to be more adept than women at sending and transcribing messages in Morse code quickly and accurately. Once written down, incoming messages were rushed by bicycle to their recipients by young men who had left school at 14 or even earlier.
