Memorial gates to the Seddonville Domain - Utopia Road, about 1 km NW of hotel.

This is a lonely monument as Seddonville is now a much smaller settlement than it used to be. The domain was reserved in early days (files in Archives NZ) and the gates were added later. The domain is now overgrown, and the memorial is almost overlooked.

The lone piper has since passed on. However the community supported by the local publican has continued the tradition. About 35 pay their respects at the dawn service. Members of the RSA Higland Pipe Band lead a march to the gates prior to travelling to reefton for a service there. In recent years I have attended as Bugeler and director of service. My fellow members of the Westport Municipal Band attend Granity Dawn Parade and I join them at Waimangaroa and Westport services later in the day.
As a member of the Granity Band I first attended services at Seddonville 56 years ago and have played continuiously at parades since.

Despite its lonely location, each ANZAC dawn the area echo's to the sound of the pipes of a lone piper. Started by an expat who visited the pub one year, and who anounced his intention to carry out a lone vigil on ANZAC Day, several locals joined him. He now makes a special trip each year and the number turning out has increased, including many young people.... Lest We Forget
