Many New Zealanders, including first-wave feminists, believed that the country's cities were full of menace, immorality and dangerous pursuits, such as gambling. This cover of the Salvation Army's newsletter The war cry, shows 'The pitfalls of the city', which asks 'What is the boy likely to become – are such associations helpful?'.
