On the first anniversary of the Pike River mine disaster, 19 November 2011, a memorial stone was unveiled in Greymouth to remember the 29 men who lost their lives. Several dignitaries attended the ceremony, including (left to right): Mayor of Grey District Tony Kokshoorn, Prime Minister John Key, Governor-General Sir Jerry Mateparae, and Lady Janine Mateparae.
