Extract from a full-page ‘in memoriam’ page published in the Auckland Star on 4 October 1918, three days after news arrived of the surrender of Bulgaria.
The notice marks the first anniversary of the attack on Gravenstafel Spur, the opening attack of the disastrous Passchendaele offensive.
More than usual numbers of ‘in memoriam’ notices appeared in the newspapers in the days after Bulgaria’s surrender as people remembered the devastating losses at Gravenstafel Spur and Bellevue Spur.
