Pomare II's pā

In 1830, following inter-tribal warfare, Ngāpuhi leader Pōmare II built a new, heavily-fortified pā at Ōtuihu, Bay of Islands, painted here by Cyprian Bridge in 1846. It became a rival to Kororāreka as a place where Europeans could buy food, timber and alcohol.
