The monument consists of an obelisk, on a square base, the whole surmounted on a foundation of reinforced concrete. The die is of black granite and on it originally were inscribed 42 names. On a cap above the die are the two mottoes: "They were a wall unto us both by night and day" and on the contiguous side: "They lie in many lands that we may live in peace" The whole structure is twenty-four feet high.
The Oxford War Memorial was unveiled on Anzac Day 1923. Mr RF Henderson detailed the circumstances of the erection of the monument. After the hymn "O God our help in ages past" there was a prayer and scripture reading and then another hymn "Lord, while for all mankind we pray". Mr Wood gave an address then the unveiling was performed by Lieutenant-Colonel EB Millton. He then gave an oration and address. After the Benediction and National Anthem the "Last Post" was sounded. Wreaths were then placed on the monument. Present were about 50 returned soldiers, relatives and parents of fallen soldiers and visitors who were entertained at an afternoon tea.
