A crowd gathers to celebrate the opening of the Ōtira railway tunnel on 4 August
1923. At the time the 8.5-km tunnel, which completed the important transalpine rail link
between Christchurch and Greymouth, was the longest in the southern hemisphere and the
sixth-longest in the world.
