Ōpōtiki war memorial

Ōpōtiki war memorial, c1986.

The Ōpōtiki War Memorial is a column topped with an elaborate Corinthian order capital based on Nelson's column in London. Designed by Auckland architect Rupert Morton, the coulumn and its base were built at the intersection of Church Street and Elliot Street. The cenotaph was officially unvieled in 1922 by the then Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey. This memorial replaced a temporary cenotaph that had been built by returned service man, William Jabez Newell. In 1927 the column was put on rollers and moved to it's current location at the end of Elliot Street at Potts Ave.
