Opotiki war memorial

Opotiki war memorial, c1986.

The Opotiki War Memorial is a column topped with an elaborate Corinthian order capital based on Nelson's column in London. Designed by Auckland architect Rupert Morton, the coulumn and its base were built at the intersection of Church Street and Elliot Street. The cenotaph was officially unvieled in 1922 by the then Prime Minister William Ferguson Massey. This memorial replaced a temporary cenotaph that had been built by returned service man, William Jabez Newell. In 1927 the column was put on rollers and moved to it's current location at the end of Elliot Street at Potts Ave.

Charles Roy Bridger worked at the Bridger's Department store ( now Hickey's Sport Store ) with Percy Bridger. Thomas Bridger who was Sarah Bridger nee Bell son started the firm. The Head Office was this store in Opotike but there was another branch at Whakatane, in a building named Bridger's Building. This building is still there and still bears the family's name. At present it is painted blue and the Prideaux Law firm is one of the offices occupying it. We would like to thank the lovely people we met at Opotike and Whakatane, including the lovely folk Dee and Mike from the Opotike Museum for their immense help and welcome when Steve my husband and Anita my sister and I went in search of our Opotike and Whakatane Bridgers. May God Bless the Bridgers and all these kind people. Kia Ora, Cynthia Thomas and Anita Strickland Cynthi
