This memorial comprises a garden, formal rose garden, steps and a rotunda (urn) with classical quotations inscribed, an arch with a comprehensive list of all service persons in Waitaki who lost their lives in all campaigns, plaques commemorating VE Day and VJ Day and a dedication plaque.

The Gardens of Memories is Oamaru's World War Two memorial. World War One soldiers are remembered by oak trees lining the streets of Oamaru. Lieut. P A Ongley has an oak tree to his memory on Severn Street. Tree number Two which is up near the Junction at the top of the hill.Rob Douglas Memorial Oaks in North Otago 12/2/11

Just that I was wondering why the list of names does not appear to be complete on the Oamaru Gardens memorial as doing family research I know of at least three young men from Oamaru who died in WW1 not listed. Two are listed on the Waitaki Boys High School Memorial. And as Patrick A Ongley father Frederick James Ongley was one of the original gardener's at Oamaru gardens I find it strange?
