New Zealand troop transports at Clyde Quay Wharf in Wellington, October 1914. Closest to the camera is HMNZT No. 9 (Hawkes Bay) – one of ten transport ships that carried the men of the NZEF Main Body from New Zealand to Egypt. Departing Wellington on 16 October 1914, the convoy headed across the Tasman to link up with troopships carrying the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) at Albany, Western Australia. The New Zealanders and Australians then set out across the Indian Ocean, eventually reaching Alexandria, Egypt on 3 December.
