New Zealand’s first military aircraft, a Blériot XI dubbed Britannia, on the ground at Epsom Racecourse, Auckland in 1914. Pilot Joe Hammond stands at right with goggles. Following the outbreak of war, New Zealand authorities returned the aircraft to England, where it flew for the Royal Flying Corps.
