International cross-traders now rule the Tasman, a run that New Zealand companies dominated last century. This is the MSC Hobart at Lyttelton in 2009. Typifying the globalisation of shipping, it was chartered by German owners to a Swiss shipping line and crewed by Eastern European officers and Asian seafarers.
