Morere Springs Scenic Reserve

Morere Springs Scenic Reserve. The reserve is located on State Highway 2, 8 km north of Nuhaka, 40 km northeast of Wairoa and 60 km southwest of Gisborne.

The establishment of scenic reserves along highways was to return great benefit for the travelling public once the motor car became more widely available in the 1950s and 1960s. Morere Springs Scenic Reserve is a well-known example. Rakai Paaka, a hapu of Ngati Kahungunu, used these springs for many years before Europeans began using them. In 1895 the Lands and Survey Department gazetted the Nuhaka Thermal Springs Reserve under the Land Act 1892. Renamed the Morere Springs Scenic Reserve, it has been administered by the Department of Conservation since 1987.

I remember staying in the cottage with my grandparents, who were employed as Rangers for the Park. We would drive down from Auckland to stay with Nana and poppa. I was a beautiful old building with magnificent rose gardens and lovelly old world charm.I remember going up the Nikua track to the top pools sitting in the nail box on the back of Poppas Honda 50 motor bike, and looking at the glow worms in the banks on the side of the tracks. Then DOC arrived, and bulldozed the whole thing, the rose gardens the lot, and put in new sterile buildings. It was a very sad thing to see.
