The Maheno brings patients to Lyttelton

The Maheno brings Canterbury patients to Lyttelton after a long voyage from Europe (note the worn paintwork). People turned out in large numbers to welcome or farewell hospital ships.

This photograph was probably taken in 1917, when the Maheno made three short visits to Lyttelton. ‘No 30’ – painted on the bow – is the designation the Admiralty gave the ship when it arrived in the Mediterranean in 1915. Officially, it remained His Majesty's New Zealand Hospital Ship No. 1.
